Case Complete! Dekaranger vs Abaranger & Magiranger vs Dekaranger

Well, I did say this would be coming, didn’t I?  To wrap up Deka for good I have the versus specials the team was involved in.  Honestly, both are some of my favorites for different reasons and I highly suggest watching them if you haven’t already.

In terms of placement, Deka vs Aba slots nicely around episode 30 or 31 while Magi vs Deka has to be between 31 and 32 of Magiranger.  Of course, you should watch Abaranger in its entirety before seeing the former movie and watch Dekaranger in its entirety before the latter.  Honestly, just go watch Aba and Magi if you haven’t.  Both are probably top 10 series IMO.

As for these releases, they are not new scripts.  I took the ones created by Imagination Station, Scull Subs, and Pocket Universe and scrubbed them for these releases here.  I had created a list of exact changes, but unfortunately my computer updated overnight when I didn’t save it, so I’m afraid you’ll have to rely on some generalizations.

I’m quite happy with Imagination Station’s work, so Deka vs Aba only received minor edits to bring it in line with my releases, such as the role call lines and OP and ED themes.  Alienizer names were also made to fit.

Magi vs Deka had more awkward lines in the script, so a good number of lines are fresh.  Again, not a new sub, but a reworking of an existing one.  So in addition to the changes made similar to Deka vs Aba, some lines were reworked and it should hopefully sound a fair bit better.

None of the typesetting on any release has been changed, except for bolding the lines in the Pocket Universe release of Magi vs Deka.

Both movies will be available in hard and soft sub, in both Blu-ray and DVD quality.  DVD raws are from Bunny Hat while Blu-ray raws are from Pocket Universe.  The reason for both is that the Blu-ray raws are… eh… upscales where it’s actually debatable which release ultimately looks better, unlike something like the summer movies.  So feel free to check both out and see which one you prefer.  I will apologize for the HD hard sub files being so big.  Did my usual format and for some reason it gave me encodes bigger than I expected.  Oh well.

The releases can be found on the main Dekaranger page you can get to by clicking the link in the top menu.  Both are in their own folders where you can choose the version you want.  This wraps up my releases of Dekaranger, so expect more Spiderman next!

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Complete Series Batch

In any case, here you are, a full batch of my version of Dekaranger.  In terms of the previous releases, there’s been a couple line changes, matching some terms, etc.  Changed one lyric in Girls in Trouble since there’s a very direct English expression that honestly works even better than what was there before.  Updated Ban’s fighting style to be more accurate.  One change I made, something I came up with while I was subbing the final episode is that Abrella shouldn’t curse normally, but instead be more of a “Curse you, Dekaranger!” so I went through and made his lines more like that to better fit his character.  Changed the most-often used line after “This is Sen’s thinking pose” to be a bit punchier.  Jasmine is an ESPer.

This batch contains episodes 1-50, Full Blast Action, and the two versus movies including them (Deka vs Aba and Magi vs Deka.)

Hope you all enjoy, and thanks for stopping by!

Dekaranger, move out!

Roger!

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Episodes 47-50

Well a lot sure has happened between last batch and this one, but it’s here.  It’s time for the thrilling conclusion!

Abrella knows the chips are down.  He’s been foiled at every turn.  In a sense, he has nothing left to lose… and there’s nothing scarier than a man who has nothing left to lose.  He might do something reckless… like charge right into the enemy base.  All your base belong to us, indeed!  It’s an Emergency!

The final notes:

  • If you’ve consumed enough Japanese media you probably already know this, but unfunny can equal cold, so it can be typical if a character, say, makes a bad joke for other characters to act like it’s cold.
  • You won’t believe it, but Jellyfis’ name is based on the English word “jellyfish.”  His species name “Kuranian” probably comes from “kurage”, which is jellyfish in Japanese.
  • For other MOTW names… “Uniga” comes from “urchin”, “Gani” comes from “crab”, Skeera comes from “suki”, to like, and “Angol” comes from, well, “angler.”
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.

I’ll make a post in the near future compiling all of the episodes into one post, along with some v2s to keep things consistent, but for now here are the final episodes:

A big thank you to all of those that have stuck by this project as it’s been coming out.  I know things weren’t always the quickest, but what in this world is?  A post with my future plans will be out shortly as per usual.

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Episodes 43-46

Well, we’re almost near the end.  But before we start looking forward we need to look back… at the previous batch!  We have a cliffhanger to take care of!  We’ll also be saying “Happy New Year!” as this batch crosses the 2004/2005 year line!  Well, with only one batch to go, I should surely hope so.  Lots of Umeko shenanigans this batch, but that doesn’t make this one any less dramatic!  We might have an officer down, who knows?

Anyway, onto our (extensive!) notes:

  • A couple aspects of episode 45… did not age well.  If sexual abuse is a trigger, stop the episode about 16 minutes in.
  • For those who still aren’t familiar with yakiniku, it’s essentially BBQ involving cooking bite-sized morsels, typically at your own table yourself.
  • Bisques is presumably named after a bisque, a creamy soup typically made with shellfish or other types of seafood.
  • Bisques’ sword is called Sword Altair, to compliment Doggie’s D-Sword Vega.  Altair and Vega are both very bright stars in the sky that make up two points in the “Summer Triangle” (Deneb is the third, and it gets significantly less references in pop culture than Altair and Vega.  Guess it just doesn’t sound cool enough.)
  • Bell ringing is a typical part of b-ringing in the new year.
  • Women leaving the work place due to getting married is very common in Japan, to the point there’s even a term for it.  I’ve just put “resigning due to marriage” and what have you for it, but it’s a thing.
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Episodes 39-42

After a brief detour, we are back with our hardboiled detectives once more, but between getting burned or losing their soul, I can’t promise this batch is any more safe for the kids!  And so soon after we had Deka Swan, we get another one-episode only ranger in the form of Deka Bright!  The Detective of Light, she also wears a golden badge…

Believe it or not, every single member of the team gets a bit of time to shine in this batch, with multiple getting background information revealed.  Who knew Hoji had a sister?  Well, that’s what we get for not asking.

Time for everyone’s favorite part.  Notes!

  • Ban and Tetsu are dressed as Edo-period firemen known as hikeshi, who would walk around to alert the townspeople of a fire at the beginning of episode 40.
  • The dons in episode 41 are named after the colors black and white.  Blacko is obvious enough, but Bianco comes from “blanc” which is French for white.
  • When describing the size of the room, Ban actually uses a tatami mat as a unit of measurement, saying it’s about “20 tatami mats big.”  I had to look up how big that actually is; it’s apparently about 30 square meters according to this site, so that’s what I put.
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.

Oh, and here’s the episodes, I guess.

Less than 10 episodes to go!  See you next time!

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Episodes 35-38

Delirious detectives and enchanting étoiles abound in this latest Deka batch.  Many are haunted by the past, but someone else is haunted by the future!  With their new SWAT Mode with them, will SPD be ready for these murdering monsters?

A bit of a more serious batch this time, but it does feature a few notable episodes in the fan-favorite episode 37 (so much so it got an Akibaranger shout-out) and episode 36, a Swan-focused episode that has the Olympic Heroine join the battlefield.  You don’t want to miss this batch!

Notes, what are they good for?:

  • Haimal’s “Your’s Trulys” come from him always repeating his name, not adopting a pronoun.  I think the intent (based on the episode) was for this to show his self-absorbed nature, so that’s why I went with that one.
  • An étoile can either refer to something shaped like a star, or is a term for the head ballerina.
  • I cannot believe this is a note but… “oompa-loompa” is a reference to the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
  • Yakko in episode 38 is voiced/played by Shoko Nakagawa, who is a known talent personality in Japan that is not only the singer for the Gurren Lagann opening Sorairo Days, a number of voices in the Pokemon anime, and a known Sentai aficionado that says she was drawn to the entertainment world due to Time Pink, but she’s also now the ex-girlfriend of Ryota Ozawa, Gokai Red!
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Episodes 31-34

Time for an upgrade!  It’s the early 30s and you know what that means!  New toys to sell!  Thankfully, this was at a time when the whole team would get a power up, though it’s not like Ban doesn’t have to go through some trials to get it.  And what a powerup it is!  If you’re a fan of the action in Super Sentai, this batch will not disappoint, on either the ground or mecha space (seriously, the mecha fight in 34 is fantastic and a standout in a season with some standout mecha fights.)  Welcoming 2020 in right!

The story also begins to move forward now that Abrella has shown himself to our detectives/officers.  The die is cast…

But before we get to the episodes, my usual notes!

  • Gocha gets called “Jiya” by Umeko/the princess in episode 31.  The “ji” is presumably coming from the same “ji” that’s in “grandpa”, meaning Umeko’s given him a nickname relating to his age.  I’ve translated it as “old-timer.”
  • Jasmine’s line “Don already?” in 32 in the original Japanese is a pun with her mentioning Ban did it without katsudon, the meal.  As mentioned before in a Denziman post, “katsu” is “win” and “don” is, well, “don”, making the sentence also “he beat the don.”  So there’s the pun.
  • The Japanese version of “cats and dogs” is “dogs and monkeys”, hence why Bunta said those animals (besides the obvious.)
  • Monjayaki is a dish that’s similar to a pancake stuffed with ingredients, but it’s eaten while it’s still runny rather than being allowed to actually harden/come together, making it very messy and needing a spatula to scrape off the iron.
  • Romanée-Conti is a very expensive, luxurious brand of wine.
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.

But enough jibber-jabber, here’s the episodes.

That’s over 2/3s done now!  We’re getting there…  See you next time!!

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Episodes 26-30

Look out, because we have a couple of birdbrains, a pill popper, and someone who thinks you have to spin to win.  It’s not all fun and games though, as Tetsu must also face a figure from his past, and try to remember that which he forgot.  Oh, and there’s a new mech combo that’s, as Hoji would say, super cool.

Hey, thanks for waiting.  Entering the second half of the show, and things seem to be heating up.  So much so, Abrella has to step out for a bit.  Come and have a totally early Christmas present!  Don’t bawk away!

I do have some notes:

  • Tylerian Durden is a reference to the movie Fight Club, where the protagonist is named, well, Tyler Durden.  A wee bit on the nose, that one.
  • Similarly, Milibar is named after a unit of atmospheric pressure.
  • I went with the word “sin” at places in episode 27 due to it using a different word than they normally use for “crime.”
  • Presumably the prison planet Alcapo is named after famous mobster Al Capone.
  • I’m continuing to use “my dude” for my translation of “kouhai”.  It honestly fits perfectly.
  • A gyaru/gal is a type of Japanese style choice involving bright colors, tan skin, and dyed hair.  The stereotype is that gals are rather dumb/airheaded, and it seemed to reach a peak in the early 2000s, around the time Deka was airing, before now seeming to be on the decline, although it is still around.
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.

Things will change even more next batch, so look forward to it!

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger The Movie – Full Blast Action

The Movie Version, Dekaranger!  An intergalactic gang known as the Gas Drinkers (they probably didn’t spend too much time coming up with a name) has found a way to turn living beings into mechanical slaves through the power of a virus.  Containing the only appearance of Deka Gold, this isn’t one to miss out on!

Quick notes:

  • The Gas Drinkers are a bunch of villain actor cameos from the 80s and 90s.  Brandel is Zydos in Dairanger, Jin is Dr. Mazenda in Liveman/Gara in Dairanger, Whinsky is known suit actor Yoshinori Okamoto who also played Booba in Changeman/Bo Gardan in Flashman/Oyobu in Maskman/Dr. Ashura in Liveman/Sargain in Hurricanger, and Volga is Junior in Kakuranger.  Wow.
  • Psst, Furabeejo and Wendinu’s actresses also get a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo in the movie.
  • Mari’s singing is not in Japanese, thus it is left untranslated… since there’s nothing to translate.
  • There’s some weird audio balance to the movie.  I apologize in advance; blame Toei.
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.

And the links to the movie:

Full Blast Action: [SOFT] [HARD] [SCRIPT]

Just a reminder that next batch will be a while since I need to focus on my actual schoolwork.  Thank you for your understanding.

Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger Episodes 21-25

In this batch, Earth gets attacked by some high-tier, abhorrent Alienizers known as the Hellz Sibling Trio.  The Dekaranger might need some more help, particularly from someone trained to take down this class of criminal.  What is Triple S!?  If that wasn’t enough, this batch also contains aliens who always live like it’s opposite day and an alien who has dedicated their life to practicing herbal remedies across the universe.  Get it all here!

Halfway there, here are some notes:

  • The term “Tokkyou” is coming out of the full name “Tokubetsu Shitei Kyouaku Hanzai Taisaku Sousaka” or, as I’ve translated it, “Specialized Sin-Prevention Squad for Cases of Extraordinary Magnitude.”  “Tokkyou” itself has thus been made “Triple S.”
  • I highly recommend rewatching episode 24 once you realize the alien’s secret.  It makes the episode pretty hilarious.
  • The Dekaranger 100% die at the end of 24.  Anything else is just purgatory.  (Just kidding.  Maybe.  Not like Toei lets Dekaranger end.)
  • Jasmine is an ESPer.
